Stand With Tigray: Prayer, Advocacy & Hope
How You Can Join a Movement to Show Tigray That It Is Loved
The 2020 conflict in Tigray brought devastating loss. Hundreds of thousands died. Millions were displaced. Communities were torn apart. Infrastructure was destroyed. The humanitarian crisis was immense. Three years later, as of this writing, the world's attention has largely moved on. Media coverage has faded. International focus has shifted elsewhere. But in Tigray, the crisis continues. People are still displaced. Families are still separated. Communities are still struggling to rebuild. Trauma is still being processed. Grief is still being carried. And yet, remarkably, the people of Tigray endure. Their faith remains. Their resilience continues. Their humanity persists. But they need the world to remember them. They need the global Christian community to stand with them. This isn't about charity or obligation. It's about solidarity rooted in our shared faith in Christ. It's about recognizing that when one part of the body of Christ suffers, all parts should suffer with it. It's about showing people who have lost so much that they are not forgotten—that they are loved. And there are concrete ways you can participate in this movement of love and support.
PRAYER: The Foundation of All Support Prayer is not a substitute for other forms of help, but it is foundational. Prayer changes things. Prayer aligns our hearts with God's heart. Prayer mobilizes spiritual power that transcends what we can do through material means alone. When you pray for Tigray, several things happen: Your own heart is transformed. As you pray for Tigrayan suffering, your compassion deepens. As you intercede for their healing, you begin to care about their wellbeing. As you ask God to work in their situation, you recognize your connection to their struggle. Prayer changes not just the situation being prayed for—it changes the person praying. Spiritual power is mobilized. Christians believe that prayer is real spiritual work. When believers pray, we're engaging in a spiritual reality that transcends the physical world. We're asking God to intervene, to work, to move in ways that human effort alone cannot accomplish. Throughout Scripture, we see prayer as a powerful force—not magic, but real spiritual power. A community of intercession forms. When many people pray for the same cause, something shifts. There's a sense of being part of something larger than yourself. There's encouragement in knowing others are praying with you. There's power in united intercession. Spiritual protection and strength are released. The Bible tells us to "pray without ceasing" and promises that God will use our prayers to strengthen His people and bring about His purposes. When you pray for Tigrayan Christians, you're releasing spiritual blessing and strength that sustains them even in their suffering. Practical Ways to Pray for Tigray:
1. Pray for the Suffering The displaced: Millions of Tigrayans were forced from their homes. Pray for their safety, for shelter, for communities that welcome them, for eventual return to their homes. "God, provide safety, shelter, and dignity for those displaced from their homes..."The grieving: Countless families have lost loved ones. Pray for comfort, for hope, for the presence of God in their grief. "Comfort those who grieve, especially mothers who have lost children, spouses who have lost partners, children who have lost parents..."The traumatized: People carry deep trauma from witnessing and experiencing violence. Pray for healing, for the availability of mental health support, for faith that helps them process what they've endured. "Heal the deep wounds of trauma, help people find pathways to recovery and hope..."The hungry: Food insecurity remains acute in many areas. Pray for harvests, for humanitarian aid, for communities to be able to feed their families. "Provide food for the hungry, restore agricultural capacity, ensure that children and vulnerable people are nourished..."
2. Pray for the ChurchLeaders: Pastors, priests, bishops, and other church leaders are shepherding deeply traumatized congregations. Pray for their wisdom, strength, and spiritual resources. "Give pastors and priests wisdom, courage, and the Holy Spirit's presence as they shepherd their people..."Spiritual renewal: Pray that faith deepens, that God's presence becomes more real, that the church becomes a source of healing and hope. "Let the 1,700-year-old faith of Tigray be renewed, let churches become centers of healing and hope..."Monastery restoration: Ancient monasteries were damaged or destroyed. Pray for their physical restoration and for them to continue as centers of faith and learning. "Restore the ancient monasteries, preserve the manuscripts and treasures, let them continue as lights of faith..."Ministry expansion: Pray that the church has resources and people to expand its ministry to the suffering—counseling, education, humanitarian work, spiritual formation. "Expand the church's capacity to minister to those who are suffering..."
3. Pray for Justice and Reconciliation Accountability: Those responsible for atrocities should face accountability. Pray for justice systems to work, for truth commissions to uncover what happened, for perpetrators to be held responsible. "Bring justice for those who perpetrated atrocities, let truth be revealed, let accountability be established..."Healing between communities: Conflict often divides communities. Pray for reconciliation, for healing between groups, for the possibility of living together again. "Heal divisions between communities, create pathways for reconciliation, help people who have been enemies learn to live together again..."Prevention of future conflict: Pray that political and economic conditions improve so that conflict doesn't recur. "Work toward political solutions, economic development, and conditions that make peace sustainable..."
4. Pray for Reconstruction and Restoration Infrastructure: Roads, bridges, water systems, electricity—much was destroyed. Pray for reconstruction. "Restore infrastructure—roads, water, electricity, healthcare systems..."Education: Schools were damaged and many children lost years of schooling. Pray for educational recovery. "Reopen schools, restore educational opportunity, help children catch up and move forward..."Livelihoods: People need to be able to work and support their families. Pray for economic recovery and opportunity. "Restore agricultural capacity, create job opportunities, help people rebuild livelihoods..."Mental health and healing: Beyond physical reconstruction, people need healing services. Pray for counselors, therapists, healers, spiritual directors. "Provide mental health services, train counselors, create spaces for healing and processing trauma..."
5. Pray for Global Awareness and Response Media attention: Pray that journalists cover Tigray's story, that the world remembers. "Move the hearts of journalists to tell Tigray's story, let the world know what's happening..."International support: Pray that governments and organizations prioritize Tigray. "Move the hearts of world leaders and organizations to prioritize Tigray's needs, provide aid and support..."Church mobilization: Pray that Christians worldwide wake up to Tigray and respond. "Awaken the global church to Tigray's need, mobilize believers to pray, give, and advocate..."Tigrayan hope: Ultimately, pray that the people of Tigray know they are loved, that they sense God's presence, that hope persists. "Let Tigrayans know they are not forgotten, that the global church stands with them, that God's love endures..."
Prayer Rhythms and PracticesDaily Prayer: Consider making Tigray part of your daily prayer practice. Morning or evening, take five minutes to intercede. It's not burdensome—it's a way of holding Tigray in your heart and aligning yourself with God's concern for the suffering.
Weekly Prayer Group: Gather with others—in your church, in your home, online—to pray together for Tigray. Corporate prayer has special power. Commit to meeting weekly, even for 30 minutes, to intercede together.
Monthly Prayer Focus: If you're part of a church, propose a monthly prayer focus on Tigray. Use your church's prayer time to lift up Tigray's needs. Share updates and prayer requests with your congregation.
Prayer Vigils: On significant dates (anniversaries of the conflict, holidays, etc.), organize prayer vigils where you gather to pray through the night or over several hours.
Prayer Letters: Write prayer letters to friends and family, sharing about Tigray and inviting them to pray. This spreads awareness and mobilizes a broader community of prayer.
Scripture-Based Prayer: Use Scripture to guide your prayers. Prayers of lament (like Psalms), prayers for justice (like those in the Psalms and the book of Revelation), prayers for comfort and hope—let Scripture shape how you pray.
GIVING: Making Real Change Possible Prayer is spiritual work. But Jesus also teaches us that faith without works is dead. That's why giving matters. Your financial support directly enables relief, rebuilding, and restoration. This isn't about getting recognition or seeing your name on a plaque. It's about participating in God's work of healing and restoration. It's about showing Tigrayan people that the global church cares enough to invest resources. It's about making practical difference in real lives.
Where Your Money Can Make a Difference Humanitarian Aid Your gift can provide: Food for families in food-insecure regions Clean water and sanitation supplies Basic medical supplies and healthcare Shelter materials for displaced families Clothing and blankets for vulnerable people When you give to humanitarian aid, you're meeting immediate, urgent needs. You're saying to someone who has lost everything: "You matter. Your life matters. We're going to help you survive and recover."
Healthcare Healthcare infrastructure was severely damaged in Tigray. Clinics lack supplies. Hospitals are overwhelmed. Your gift can: Provide medical supplies and equipment Support healthcare workers Enable vaccination and disease prevention Provide maternal health services Support mental health and trauma counseling
Education Children in Tigray lost years of schooling. Many are still struggling to return. Your gift can: Provide school supplies and materials Support teacher training Rebuild school infrastructure Provide scholarships for vulnerable students Support early childhood education

Different Ways to Give One-Time Donations Give a gift in response to a specific urgent need or simply out of generosity. One-time gifts add up and make real difference.
Monthly Partnership Become a monthly supporter. When you commit to giving regularly—even a small amount—it creates predictable support that enables long-term work. Monthly partnerships are especially valuable because they allow organizations to plan and commit to sustained programs.
Project-Specific Giving Give toward a specific project: "Rebuild a School," "Support a Monastery," "Provide Medical Supplies," "Feed a Family for a Month." Knowing exactly how your gift is used can be meaningful and motivating.
Annual Giving Make a significant annual gift. This might be timed to a holiday, a birthday, or a decision to devote part of your annual giving to Tigray.
Workplace Giving Many workplaces have giving programs. You can direct a portion of your charitable giving toward Tigray through your employer.
Legacy Giving Consider including Tigray in your will or estate planning. A legacy gift can create lasting impact long into the future.
Giving With Wisdom As you give, consider: Accountability: Know where your money is going. Ask questions about how funds are used. Look for organizations with strong financial transparency and accountability. Sustainability: Prefer organizations that are helping Tigrayans help themselves rather than creating dependency. Microloans, skills training, and asset-building are more sustainable than one-time handouts. Local leadership: Support organizations that are led by Tigrayans themselves or that partner closely with Tigrayan leaders. Tigrayans know their own needs best. Dignity: Give in ways that respect the dignity of recipients. Avoid giving in ways that humiliate or demean. Partner with Tigrayans as equals in the work of reconstruction. Long-term vision: Give toward sustainable change, not just short-term relief. Both are needed, but long-term restoration requires sustained investment.
ADVOCACY: Using Your Voice for Justice Advocacy means using your voice, your platform, your influence to speak on behalf of Tigray and to mobilize broader support. While prayer and giving are crucial, advocacy ensures that Tigray's story isn't forgotten and that political and institutional power is mobilized for change. Tell the Story In Your Circles Share Tigray's story with friends, family, your church community. Tell them about: Tigray's ancient Christian heritage The 2020 conflict and its impact The resilience of Tigrayan people Current ongoing needs Ways they can get involved Don't assume people know about Tigray. Most don't. By sharing, you're educating and awakening consciousness.
The Power of Community Here's something crucial: You don't do this alone. When you pray for Tigray, you join millions of other believers praying. When you give, your gift joins gifts from thousands of others. When you advocate, your voice joins voices speaking for justice. There's power in numbers. There's encouragement in community. There's momentum created when many people move together toward the same goal. Consider: Joining or starting a prayer group focused on Tigray Connecting with other Tigray advocates Becoming part of an advocacy organization Participating in community events Building relationships with Tigrayan people Learning from others committed to this cause The movement to show Tigray that it is loved isn't a solo effort. It's a communal effort. And the more people who participate, the greater the impact.
A Personal Calling I want to say something personally. I'm writing this because I carry Tigray in my heart. As someone from a Tigrayan family, I know my people. I know what they're facing. I know what they need. And I know that when they feel forgotten, it breaks my heart. But I also know the power of being remembered. I know what it means to a traumatized person when someone says, "I haven't forgotten you. I'm praying for you. I'm standing with you." I know how that changes things. That's why I'm inviting you into this movement. Not out of obligation. Not out of guilt. But out of the recognition that we're part of the same human family and the same faith family. That when one part of the body of Christ suffers, all parts should respond. Your prayer matters. Your giving matters. Your voice matters. Tigray needs the global church to wake up and stand with them. And you can be part of that awakening.

One Final Word: Hope The situation in Tigray is serious. The suffering is real. The needs are immense. I'm not minimizing any of that. But I also know this: God has not abandoned Tigray. The 1,700-year-old faith of Axum continues. The people endure. And believers worldwide are awakening to stand with them. Change is possible. Healing is possible. Restoration is possible. But it requires prayer. It requires giving. It requires advocacy. It requires people like you who care enough to get involved. Will you join us? Will you stand with Tigray?
